La settima luna
The seventh moon
era quella del luna-park.
was the one in the amusement park.
Lo scimmione si aggirava
The bit ape wandered
dalla giostra al bar,
from the carousel to the bar,
mentre l'angelo di Dio bestemmiava,
while God's angel was swearing,
facendo sforzi di petto –
straining his chest -
grandi muscoli e poca carne –
big muscles and little flesh -
povero angelo benedetto.
poor blessed angel.
La sesta luna
The sixth moon
era il cuore di un disgraziato
was a wretched man
che, maledetto il giorno che era nato,
who, though his birth was ill-fated,
ma rideva sempre.
always laughed.
Da anni non vedeva le lenzuola;
He hadn't seen a bedsheet for years;
con le mani, con le mani sporche di carbone
with his hands, his hands dirty from coal
toccava il culo a una signora,
he touched a lady's ass,
e rideva, e toccava;
and laughed, and touched;
sembrava lui il padrone.
he seemed to be the master.
La quinta luna
The fifth moon
fece paura a tutti.
scared everyone.
Era la testa di un signore
It was the head of a gentleman
che con la morte vicino giocava a biliardino.
who played billiards with impending death.
Era grande ed elegante,
He was big and elegant,
né giovane né vecchio,
not young nor old,
Sicuramente era malato
He was surely ill
perché perdeva sangue da un orecchio.
because he bleeded from an ear.
La quarta luna
The fourth moon
era una fila di prigionieri
was a line of prisoners
seguivano le rotaie del treno.
along the railroad tracks.
Avevano i piedi insanguinati
Their feet were bleeding
e le mani, e le mani, e le mani senza guanti.
and the hands, and the hands, and the hands without gloves.
Ma non preoccupatevi:
But don't worry:
il cielo è sereno
the sky is clear
oggi non ce ne sono più tanti.
today there aren't as many of them anymore.
La terza luna
The third moon
uscirono tutti per guardarla.
was such that everyone got out to see it.
Era così grande
It was so big
che più di uno pensò al Padre Eterno.
That more than one person thought of Our Immortal Father.
Sospesero i giochi e si spensero le luci;
The games stopped and the lights were turned off;
cominciò l'inferno.
Hell began.
La gente corse a casa
People ran home
perché per quella notte
Because for that one night
ritornò l'inverno.
The winter came back again.
La seconda luna
The second moon
portò la disperazione tra gli zingari.
Brought despair to the gypsies.
Qualcuno addirittura si amputò un dito.
One of them even cut off his finger.
Andarono in banca a fare qualche operazione
They went to the bank for some transaction
ma – che confusione! –
But - what a mess! -
la maggior parte prese cani e figli
Most of them took their dogs and children
e corse alla stazione.
And ran to the railway station.
L'ultima luna
The last moon
la vide solo un bimbo appena nato.
Was only seen by a newborn baby.
Aveva occhi tondi e neri e fondi
He had black, deep eyes
e non piangeva.
And he didn't cry.
Con grandi ali prese la luna tra le mani,
With his large wings he took the moon in his hands,
e volò via… e volò via…;
And he flew away... and he flew away...;
era l'uomo di domani.
He was the man of tomorrow.
E volò via… e volò via…;
And he flew away... and he flew away...;
era l'uomo di domani.
He was the man of tomorrow.
