Translation of the song Tantum Ergo Sacramentum artist Christian Hymns & Songs

Latin

Tantum Ergo Sacramentum

English translation

This Great Mystery

Pange, lingua, gloriosi

Acclaim Him, speaking of his glory,

Corporis mysterium,

The mystery of His body;

Sanguinisque pretiosi,

And the precious blood,

Quem in mundi pretium,

He is the world's reward;

Fructus ventris generosi,

The noble fruit of the womb

Rex effudit gentium.

A king going out to many nations.

Nobis datus, nobis natus

Given unto us, He was born

Ex intacta Virgine,

Of an unknown Virgin;

Et in mundo conversatus

And in this world he consorted

Sparso verbi semine,

Sowing his spoken seed

Sui mores incolatus

By His character and conduct

Miro clausit ordine.

The wonderous works of His way.

In supremae nocte coenae?

On the night of The Last Supper

Recumbens cum fratribus.

At the table with His brethren.

Observata lege plene

Observing the obligations

Cibis in legalibus,

For The Passover meal

Cibum turbae duodenae

By this sustenance with the twelve

Se dat suds manibus.

He gave Himself through the work of His hands.

Verbum caro, panem verum

His word is the bread of truth

Verbo carnem efficit,

The Word made flesh,

Fitque sanguis Christi merum;

The wine, changed into Christ's Blood;

Et si sensus deficit,

And should our senses fail

Ad firmandum cor sincerum

To confirm it by His sincere heart

Sola fides sufficit.

Then faith alone is enough.

Tantum ergo Sacramentum

This Great Mystery

Veneremur cernui:

With bowing veneration:

Et antiquum documentum

And by the ancient commandments

Novo cedat ritui:

Let this new rite yield;

Praestet fides supplementurn

By bestowing renewed faith

Sensuum defectui.

Beyond the faultering senses.

Genitori Genitoque

The Father and The Son

Laus et iubilatio,

We praise with jubilation

Salus, honor, virtue quoque

They are the salvation, honour, virtue too,

Sit et benedictio:

And those blessings:

Procedenti ab utroque

That come from them both

Compar sit laudatio.

Thus equally to be praised.

Amen.

Amen.
