Emk hraðkvæðr
For generous prince
hilmi at mæra,
swift praise I find,
en glapmáll
but stint my words
of gløggvinga,
to stingy churl,
opinspjallr
openly sing I
of jǫfurs dôðum,
of king's true deeds,
en þagmælskr
but silence keep
of þjóðlygi.
on slander's lies.
Skaupi gnœgðr
For fabling braggarts
skrǫkberǫndum,
full am I of scorn,
emk vilkvæðr
but willing speak I
of vini mína;
of worthy friends:
sótt hefk mǫrg
courts I of monarchs
mildinga sjǫt
a many have sought,
með grunlaust
a gallant minstrel
grepps of œði.
of guileless mood.
Gekk maðr engr
Out of the mansion
at Engla hersis
at Jarl of England,
ór legvers
When guested and rested
lǫngum knerri
In generous wise,
háði leiddr
None with hard jest,
né heiptkviðum
None with rude jeer,
með atgeirs
None with his axe-hand
auðar toptir.
Ungifted hie.
Hinn's fégrimmr,
The man in Fjordane
es í Fjǫrðum býr,
shows money no love:
sá's of-dolgr
he banishes rings
Draupnis niðja,
that drip like fruit,
sǫkunautr
defies the ring-clad
of sona hvinna,
verse-brew's thief,
hringum hættr
hacks treasures in half,
hoddvegandi.
imperils brooches.
