Skal maðr vinr vera
A man should be a friend,
Þeim ok þess vin
And to his friend's friend as well.
En óvinar síns
But to his enemy's friend
Skyli engi maðr
Should no man
Vinar vinr vera
Be a friend.
Veiztu, ef þú vin átt
Do you know, if you have a friend
Þann er þú vel trúir
Whom you fully trust,
Ok vill þú af hánum þó gótt geta
And from whom you want good things,
Geði skaltu við þann blanda
You should blend your mind with his,
Ok gjöfum skipta
And exchange gifts,
Fara at finna oft
And go to see him often.
Ef þú átt annan
If you have another
Þanns þú illa trúir
Whom you don't trust,
Vildu af hánum þó gótt geta
But from whom you want good things nonetheless,
Fagrt skaltu við þann mæla
You should speak kindly to him,
En flátt hyggja
But think falsely,
Ok gjalda lausung við lygi
And repay deceitfulness with a lie.
Það er enn of þann
So it is with him
Er þú illa trúir
Who you don't trust,
Ok þér er grunr at hans geði
And whose mind you do not know,
Hlæja skaltu við þeim
You should laugh with them,
Ok um hug mæla
But don't tell them your thoughts;
Glík skulu gjöld gjöfum
Return their gifts with similar gifts.
Ungr var ek forðum
I was young long ago,
Fór ek einn saman
I traveled alone,
Þá varð ek villr vega
And I came to wild roads;1
Auðigr þóttumk
I thought I was rich
Er ek annan fann
When I found another
Maðr er manns gaman
Man is the joy of man
Maðr er manns gaman
Man is the joy of man
