Mama cu tata
The mother and the father
Marită fata.
Marry the daughter
Săraca fată, pentru dânsa-i prima dată.
Poor girl, for her it's the first time
Da` mirele i-a spus -
But the groom told her
Că dacă nouri nu-s,
That if there aren't clouds (now)
Aşa ar trebui să fie toată viaţa.
The entire life should be like this
Da, da` parcă poţi să crezi,-
Yes, but as if you can believe this!
Pân` nu te-nsori nu vezi.-Until you don't get married, you don't realise ( it addresses to the groom, because in Romanian there are different terms for man and woman. In english you say get married but in Romanian the verb for the girl is: se mărită-she gets married and for the boy- se însoară
he gets married)
Şi dac-ai intrat în joc,
And if you joined the game
Joacă pân` la urmă!-Play till the end (this is a romanian expression, I translated it word-by
word, but it actually referes not to game but to dance: if you joined the dance, dance till the end and it refers to the circle dances we have, where you usually keep dancing with the others till the end of the song, you don't leave the circle sooner)
Cântă tare, lăutare, să te-audă bucătarii,
Sing loud, musician, so that the cooks can hear you ( here musician= member of popular bands who sing traditional music at parties, weddings, etc)
So that they pour us in the glasses, the best wine
Everybody dances with everybody, using their hands and feet
Only (the one) who is not in the mood (good mood), let them stay in the middle of the road! (let them stay outside the party)
Din lume-n lume,
From world to world ( actualy it means a lot of people)
Se-adună-anume
Gather specifically for this purpose
Şi fiecare spune
atâtea vorbe bune... And each one of them says so many good words
Cadouri, bani şi flori,
Gifts, money and flowers
Cu chefuri până-n zori,
With parties till dawn
Aşa se face nunta pe la moldoveni!
This is how the wedding is made at the moldavians!
Mâncare - te îngropi, -Food
you can burry yourself in it!
Pahare - pline ochi, -Glasses
full!
Vioara cântă, cântă, cântă, cântă, cântă...
The violin is playing, is playing, is playing
Cântă tare, lăutare, să te-audă bucătarii,
Sing loud, musician, so that the cooks can hear you
So that they pour us in the glasses, the best wine
Everybody dances with everybody, using their hands and feet
Only (the one) who is not in the mood (good mood), let them stay in the middle of the road!
Mama cu tata,
The mother and the father
Îşi laudă fata,
Praise thier daughter
Because their daughter has never been with others
Da` mirele-a tăcut.
But the groom stayed silent
Adică, i-a crezut.
Meaning, he believed them
Because that's how it's supposed to be till the wedding
Da, da` parcă poţi să crezi,
Yes, but as if you can believe
Pân` nu te-nsori nu vezi.
Till you don't get married you don't realise it!
Şi dacă ai intrat in joc,
And if you joined the dance
“Bea Grigore-aghiazma!”
Drink, Grigore, holy water!( another Romanian expression, meaning: want it or not, if you've made it so far, you can't go back!)
Chitara cântă, cântă, cântă, cântă, cântă!..
The guitar is playing, playing, playing
