Stabat Mater dolorósa
Stood the Mother of Sorrows
iuxta crucem lacrimósa,
in tears at the Cross
dum pendébat Fílius.
on which the Son hung.
Cuius ánimam geméntem,
A sword pierced.
contristátam et doléntem
his groaning, grieved
pertransívit gládius.
and sore soul.
Quam tristis et afflícta
O how sad and afflicted
fuit illa benedícta
was that holy Mother
Mater Unigéniti!
of the Only Begotten Son!
Quae mœrébat et dolébat,
How saddened and hurt
pia Mater, dum vidébat
the pious Mother
nati pœnas ínclyti.
seeing the pains of the glorious Son.
Quis est homo, qui non fleret,
Who is the man, who would not weep,
Christi Matrem si vidéret
whelmed in miseries so deep,
in tanto supplício?
Christ's dear Mother to behold?
Vidit suum dulcem natum
She saw her tender Child,
moriéntem desolátum,
hang in desolation,
dum emísit spíritum.
till His spirit forth sent.
Eia, Mater, fons amóris,
O Mother! fount of love!
me sentíre vim dolóris
let me feel the strength of your pain,
fac, ut tecum lúgeam.
so I can cry with you.
Fac, ut árdeat cor meum
Make my heart blaze
in amándo Christum Deum,
in the loving of Christ, the Lord,
ut sibi compláceam.
so that I may please Him.
Sancta Mater, istud agas,
Holy Mother, do it,
crucifíxi fige plagas
the crucified Christ's sores
cordi meo válide.
hard print in my hearth
Fac, ut portem Christi mortem,
Make me bear the death of Christ,
passiónis fac consòrtem
Make me share His Passion,
et plagas recólere.
and His wounds remember.
Fac me plagis vulnerári,
Make me be afflicted with those wounds
cruce hac inebriári
And intoxicated with this Cross
et cruòre Fílii.
and blood of Your Son.
Flammis ne urar ne succénsus,
That I am not burned by the flames,
per te, Virgo, sim defénsus
that I am, O Virgin, defended by you
in die iudícii.
in the Judgment Day.
Quando corpus moriétur,
When body will die,
fac, ut ánimæ donétur
may the soul get
paradísi glória.
the Paradise’s glory.
